Seeing Father's Forgiveness Clearly

Forgiveness is something we all want to receive but often don't want to give to others. We also often want resitution or payback before we forgive. Payment could take on many forms such as the person hurting or suffering the way they caused us to suffer.

What exactly is forgiveness, God's view of forgiveness,  and how does it work?  Forgiveness to us from God comes through Jesus Christ and his death on the cross, without resitution, punishment or payback. It's call Graces where we are forgiven freely because Jesus paid it all.  So, shouldn't we forgive others as freely as we have been forgiven?
